Voting Underway In Chilubi

Voting has started in the Chilubi parliamentary by-election with polling stations opening at 06 hours.ZANIS reports that at Chaba  polling station , Presiding officer Diwell  Mwansa declared  the polling station open  at exactly 06 hours.Chaba polling station has 1,501 voters with two streams while Chitonge polling station, which also opened at 06hrs has about  426 registered voters.And ZNBC’s Brian Mwale reports from Chilubi that Chitonge and Mchinshi polling stations started with a low turnout of Zero and four voters respectively as at 06:00 hours.However, Kashitu and Yombwe Primary schools polling stations had huge turnout similarly with Santa Maria Polling Station.And Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano, who checked through some of the polling stations, expressed optimism that voting will pick up as the day proceeds.Mr. Nshindano has told ZNBC News that the commission will be slowly monitoring events as they unfold.Five political parties are participating in the by-election.The PF is fielding Mulenga Fube, Stanislaus Chele is standing on the UPND ticket while , Mushimu Kalenga for NDC, Mark Mpundu for PAC and Charles Kalaba for UPPZ.Chilubi constituency has 62 polling stations with 46,677 registered voters.The Chilubi by-election has gone ahead despite an application by the UPND and national democratic congress -NDC- to restrain the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- from holding the election today.This is because Lusaka High Court Judge Getrude Chawatama could not hear the matter by the petitoners on account that they did not serve the PF and that the Attorney General who only joined the case yesterday.The   Chilubi parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of  PF chilubi member of parliament  Rosario Fundanga last year.
