The Zambia U23 national soccer team on Thursday arrived back home after a successful outing in Malawi that saw them pick a 1 – 0 away against Malawi in the Egypt 2019 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The  Beston Chambeshi coached side is in pole position to qualify ahead of the second leg that will be played on Sunday.

Assistant coach Bilton Musonda –

“We did not plan to concede and that is what we did. It was a good outing and we are positive going into the second leg. We will continue working hard so that we continue on our journey to Tokyo 2020,”

“I want to congratulate the boys for a job well done in Malawi. I would also like to thank the FAZ executive for their support, it is not easy to camp a team in South Africa where we went for eight days.”

The winner over the two legs will play the winner between Burundi and Congo Brazaville. The two drew 0 – 0 in the first leg played in Burundi.

A total of eight teams qualify to play in the final tournament, including Egypt who qualified automatically as hosts. These matches also serve as the first stage of the CAF qualifiers for the 2020 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Japan.

The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in Zambia, but they withdrew from hosting in July 2017.  Egypt was announced as the new host nation of the tournament by CAF on 23 September 2017.
