US Embassy Condemns Post Closure, Demands Its Re-opening

Post Police PresenceThe US Embassy in Zambia has condemned the closure of the country’s leading private newspaper – The Post – stating the timing of by the Zambian Revenue Authority, only weeks before important elections in Zambia, is of deep concern.

“The closure of The Post is the loss of an independent voice during the campaign period and election cycle. The United States Government urges the Government of the Republic of Zambia to work with the Zambian Revenue Authority and The Post to find a way forward that allows The Post to reopen immediately.

“The free flow of information to the Zambian people is an essential element of a free, fair, credible and peaceful election,” reads a statement on the website.

Meanwhile, it is business as usual at The Post Newspapers on day three of the paper’s closure by ZRA Authorities.

Members of staff have shifted the newsroom which is the core of the institution to outside the premises at the headquarters on Bwinjimfumu road in Rhodespark.

So far after the closure on Tuesday evening over the disputed K53 million tax debt the paper has twice hit the streets from a contingent plan.

Here the paper seems well on course for the third edition with members of staff getting on with their business outside.
