UPND field in 156 constituencies, and only 28 women

The opposition UPND says it has managed to field parliamentary candidates in all the 156 constituencies. Speaking in Lusaka, UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said the party’s adoption process was smooth.

He also announced that the party has adopted 28 women to contest parliamentary elections and he is hopeful they will win the polls

Mr Kakoma said other issues arising out of the adoption process were being addressed amicably.

Mr Kakoma said the measure will increase participation of women in decision-making positions.

However gender activist Sara Longwe has bemoaned the lower adoption percentage for women in parliamentary, mayoral and local government.

In the run-up to the adoptions within political party’s, there was a lot of pronouncements with political Party’s pledging 40% adoption between women and the youths but that has never materialized.

Major political party’s had earlier hidden the list of the adopted candidates probably to avoid scrutiny from members of the public and the media.
