UPND Condemns Fuel Pump Price Hike

By Leah Ngoma

The opposition UPND has criticized the increase in fuel pump prices by the Energy Regulation Board-ERB- saying it will add more pain to Zambians who are already struggling with the current high cost of living.

ERB yesterday announced a fuel pump price increase which saw the price of petrol increase by 78 ngwee per litre, diesel by 80 ngwee, kerosene by K 1.68 and low sulfur gas by 80 ngwee.

But UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka feels the reasoning being advanced by the energy minister Mathews Nkhuwa that the increase in fuel prices is due to Kwacha depreciation against major foreign currencies is a demonstrations that PF has no solutions to Zambia’s current economic problems.

Mr Katuka has further told Phoenix News that it is the PF administration which has made the Kwacha to depreciate due to its poor monetary and fiscal policies.

He has therefore advised the government to build fuel reserves in the country to use in times of need like this one until world oil prices stabilise among other measures.
