Unions to engage FQM over layoffs

ZBC News

Mine Unions on the Copperbelt have described as unfortunate pronouncements by first quantum minerals in North Western Province to lay off some of its workers.

National Union of Miners and allied Workers -NUMAW- President SAUL SIMUJIKA says the unions will engage First Quantum Minerals on the way forward as it seeks a situation that favours both parties.

This was during a press briefing in Kitwe today.

Meanwhile the Unions are happy with the progress that the government has made on ending the situation surrounding Konkola Copper Mine and Mopani.

Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) President JOSEPH CHEWE said that the government through the Mines minister will soon address the nation on ending the KCM and Mopani impasse.

Mr. CHEWE said the unions are working hard to ensure that the interests of the workers at the two mines are protected.

And Mr SIMUJIKA said his union appreciates government efforts in resolving the issues surrounding the two mining giants on the Copperbelt.
