Union Defends Civil Servants Who Placed Themselves On List Of FISP Beneficiaries

By Logic Lukwanda

Transparency international Zambia –TIZ- has demanded that all the 7,700 civil servants who placed themselves on the list of the farmer input support program –FISP- beneficiaries should be prosecuted.
TIZ president Reuben Lifuka says what the affected civil servants did is tantamount to fraud and disciplining them only is not enough.

Mr. Lifuka has since called for a thorough cleanup of FISP to ensure only the intended beneficiaries receive the farming inputs.
He tells Phoenix News that what has happened suggests a big problem in the civil service showing entrenched and systemic abuse and selfishness.

But civil servants and allied workers union of Zambia president, David Chiyobe says the civil servants should not be prosecuted or dismissed but corrected as they are also vulnerable in many ways.

Mr Chiyobe stressed that punishing civil servants would be unfair because even tradition leaders who are on government salary are beneficiaries of FISP.
