UNHCR EXPRESSES GRATITUDE TO  ZAMBIA

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees -UNHCR- special envoy for the horn of Africa MOHAMMED ABDI AFFEY has expressed gratitude to the Zambian Government on its response to the refugee crisis in neighbouring countries.

Mr. AFFEY says Zambia is currently hosting over 1-hundred thousand refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC, Rwanda and Somalia.

He also says Zambia must be commended for being a peaceful country as demonstrated during the 2021 General Election transition of power.

Mr. AFFEY says this has helped provide safe Asylum of refugees coming to Zambia.

The UNHCR special envoy who is in Zambia on a three day visit was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today.

Mr. AFFEY explained that he is in Zambia to engage Government on various issues

He disclosed that he is going to appeal to the international community to help Zambia manage the refugee crisis.

And UNHCR Country Representative PIERRINE AYLARA said there are eleven thousand refugees from DRC willing to go back to their home.

Ms AYLARA said this is because their country is slowly returning to peace, a situation she described as good news.
