Traditional Doctor in Court for failing to revive dead Nyau

By Christopher Miti

A Malawian traditional doctor has appeared in the Chipata Magistrates’ Court for obtaining money by false Pretences after he claimed that he would resurrect a dead person in Kasenengwa district.

Emmanuel Banda 34 obtained 900 Kwacha from the family of Drain Nyirenda of Katintha village in chief Chikuwe’s area who died while performing Gulewamkulu, a Chewa traditional dance.

Mr Nyirenda died while performing Gologolo dance, which involves dancing on high poles on 24th December 2023.

The deceased is alleged to have inserted his head in a loop of a mosquito net string that was tied to a 35-metre pole.

The father of the deceased who was the second prosecution witness said the traditional doctor failed to bring to life his son despite paying him.

Mr Nyirenda said the accused wrapped bedsheets on a plunk which looked like a human being and claimed that it was his late son.

Public Prosecutor Bright Lishebo said the state will call five witnesses.

Chipata Resident magistrate Destiny Kalusopa adjourned the matter to 10th April 2024 for continuation of trial.
