TIZ advises Auditor General to resign on moral grounds

Transparency International Zambia -TIZ- has called on the Auditor General DICK SICHEMBE to consider resigning from his position on moral grounds.

TIZ Executive Director MAURICE NYAMBE says this is to allow for thorough and credible investigations.

The organisation has also welcomed the arrest of  Dr. SICHEMBE by the Anti-Corruption Commission -ACC- for alleged corrupt practices.

He says the arrest of such a senior official within the government system fits the narrative that there is no sacred cow in the fight against corruption.

Mr. NYAMBE said in an interview with ZNBC news that he is confident once Dr. SICHEMBE’s trial commences, it will give him the opportunity to defend himself against the charges slapped on him.

The TIZ Executive Director is also hopeful that the Anti-Corruption Commission has done its due diligence in investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, Mr. NYAMBE said his organisation has taken note of calls from some circles of society demanding that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA removes Dr. SICHEMBE from his position.

He however explained that the constitution is clear about the procedure for removal of an Auditor General from Office.

On Thursday, the ACC arrested Dr. SICHEMBE for corrupt practices involving over one million kwacha.

He has been charged with one count of obtaining Goods by False Pretences, one count of conspiracy to defraud the Government and one count of willful failure to follow applicable procedures contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act.
