Three people die in Lusaka market inferno

THREE people have died after store rooms they were in caught fire at Kabwata market in Lusaka.

According to police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the fire is believed to have started from outside.

“There was a fire incident that occurred on June 14, 2016 around 02:00 hours at Kabwata Market. Members of the public reported that three store rooms caught fire. In the first store room was Emmanuel other names not known aged between 30 and 35 of unknown address and an unknown male adult got burnt and died on the spot,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.

“In the second store room were packets of Shake Shake beer and in between the corridors was Joseph other names not known aged between 30 and 35 who was sleeping on a chair also died on the spot. The owners of the store rooms and value of the property destroyed is not yet known.”

Mr. Hamoonga stated that police officers visited the scene and fire was stopped by the Fire Brigade and that the bodies were in UTH mortuary hospital.

And Mr. Hamoonga stated that a house in Lusaka’s Kalingalinga area caught fire destroying all the property.
“Another fire incident occurred on June 13, 2016 around 23:40 hours at house number B1/2/8, Kalingalinga. Rodwell Chileya aged 38 of the above address reported that his house caught fire and household goods whose value is not yet ascertained got burnt as the owner was in a state of shock,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.
“Cause of fire is suspected to be an electrical fault. Fire was stopped by fire brigade and no life was lost.”
