Thieves loot medical equipment from ZAMMSA warehouse

By Brian Mwale

Medical equipment worth K1.6 million has been stolen from the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency -ZAMMSA- warehouse in Lusaka.

ZAMMSA Board Chairperson ANNA CHIFUNGULA says the warehouse was broken into and the thieves made away with various dental equipment and assorted CT scan accessories worth millions of Kwacha.

Dr. CHIFUNGULA says the board is shocked that unscrupulous individuals would sink so low as to steal medical equipment meant for the sick in hospitals across the nation.

She says the matter has since been reported to the police.

Dr. CHIFUNGULA adds that this is not the first break-in that has occurred at the same warehouse as another happened in March last year were equipment valued over one million kwacha was stolen.

She says ZAMMSA will leave no stone unturned in finding the people behind the theft.

This is contained in a statement availed to ZNBC News in Lusaka.

And Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson DANNY MWALE has confirmed that police this morning received a report of the theft from ZAMMSA Inventory Assistant CEPHUS MKANDAWIRE who reported on behalf of the institution.

He said police were informed that the theft happened between January 3rd and 4th after all workers had knocked off.
