The TEDxLusaka Story

TEDxLusaka began as a small event of three speakers in 2011 and 2013. Both of these events were organised by a small group of like-minded individuals, with funding from their friends and families.
In 2016, the TEDxLusaka brand had grown significantly enough to be the curtain-raising event of the AfDB Annual General Meeting held in Lusaka that May. Over 1200 conference participants and Lusaka residents gathered to hear a line-up of over fifteen speakers from all over Africa, representing various professional sectors and walks of life. Speakers that year included John Kufuor (former President of Ghana), Pompi and Mulenga Kapwepwe.
In 2017, the event drew the interest of partners such as Barrick Lumwana, DIGIPrint, MTN Zambia, FNB Zambia, Proflight, Autus Securities Limited, Java Foods and others, and sold over 800 tickets for a line-up of speakers that included Dickson Jere, Linda Kasonde, Mafipe Chunga, El Mukuka, Trevor Mumba, and Laura Miti. Both the 2016 and 2017 events were MCeed by Kapalu Mutenda.
In 2019, TEDxLusaka hosts an event for 700 ticketholders, and partnering at this year are Zanaco, DIGIPrint, NIPA Conference Centre, Fiahlink Photography, Pam Golding Properties Zambia, among others. This year, speakers include Pilato, Nsofwa Sampa, Chitambala Mwewa, Dr Maria Akani, Chibamba Kanyama, and the youth drama group Africa Directions; Kapalu Mutenda returns as MC.
Year on year, TEDxLusaka’s community has grown, raising the bar of the conference with each event. The 2019 event is set to surpass expectations and continue to elevate ideas worth spreading.
