Zesco United have been crowned 2019 Superleague champions after successfully defending the trophy with a 3-1 win on post-match penalties over Green Eagles. The match initially finished nil-nil in regulation time.

Zega wins three successive league titles and 8 overall league trophies to their name 4 behind Nkana who have won it most in the history of Zambian football (12 times).

They now join an elite group of Green Buffaloes, Nkana, Mufulira Wanderers and Kabwe Warriors who have won the league on three successive occasions.

While Green Eagles will have themselves to blame for missing out on winning their first league title, they dominated the match from the first whistle but could not convert the possession into goals, the Kawale boys restricted Zesco United from posing any danger.

Their pressure paid off when Amity Shamenda put the ball behind the net but the goal was ruled out for an offside. Shamenda nearly made it count from a free kick, the woodwork denied him.

The match went to penalties and goalkeeper Jacob Banda was the hero for Zesco, he’s saved two penalties and scored the winning shot out.

Next for both Champions Zesco United and Green Eagles will be preparing for the CAF Champions League which will start in August.

In the early kickoff, Tanzanian Striker Eleuter Herman Mpepo scored a first-half hat-trick to help Buildcon to a 3-1 win over Ten men Zanaco in a third and fourth playoff.
