Chipolopolo defender Stopilla Sunzu is set to play in the French Ligue 1 next season after his Ligue 2 side Metz secured automatic promotion following a 2-1 victory away to Red Star, who got relegated to the National on Friday.

The Ligue 2 leaders now have 75 points and opened an insurmontable eleven point gap on third place Troyes, who won away at Orléans to keep alive their hopes of automatic promotion, with three matches remaining.

Troyes are four points behind second place Brest, who host Lens on Saturday.

It was the club’s top scorer Habib Diallo who opened the scoring as he netted his 23rd goal of the campaign when he converted a 21st minute penalty, with Ismael Camara equalising for the hosts in the 45th minute before Opa Nguette scored the winner at the death.

Sunzu has been key in defence for Metz from where he contributed two goals while forming a formidable defence partnership with Ghanaian John Boye that has so far conceded only 22 goals, a feat only matched by Paris FC after 35 rounds of matches.

Metz next match is at home to Valenciennes on Friday, May 3.
