Stalled Construction Works At Syno Hydroelectric Power Station Due To Delayed Funding From Chinese Govt

Energy Minister Matthew Nkhuwa says the Zambian government has already fulfilled its financial obligation towards the construction of 750 megawatts syno hydroelectric power station on the Kafue River.

Following stalled works on the syno hydroelectric power station, Mr Nkhuwa explained that works which are being financed by the Zambian government and foreign financial institutions including Exim Bank of China have been suspended as government has not yet received funding to enable the contractors to continue with works.

Mr Nkhuwa who acknowledges the negative impact the suspension of works will have on the economy, says if completed on schedule, the project is envisaged to address the growing energy demand in the country and further alleviate the current power deficit.

Syno hydro, the contractor engaged to build the 750megawatts hydro power station at Kafue gorge lower last week suspended operations and sent all employees home, notifying that due to challenges beyond its control, it had suspended operations.
