President William RUTO has called for the reform of the African Union – AU- to ensure its effectiveness in serving the interests of the Continent.

President RUTO says the reform of AU must be treated as a matter of priority by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa – COMESA.

He says the body must be transformed into one that will have capacity to engage globally.

The Kenyan Head of State made this call during his maiden speech to the 22nd COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit in Lusaka today.

Mr. RUTO also called for economic integration of Africa economies and an increase in intra-COMESA trade.

And President of Malawi LAZARUS CHAKWERA, who also made his maiden speech, said full economic integration of the COMESA region remains a challenge and expressed concern that the bloc is not pursuing the agenda with urgency it deserves.

President CHAKWERA said COMESA needs to move with speed on economic integration in view of the impact of climate change and geopolitical tensions on the Continent.

And Vice President of Libya ABDULLAH AL-LAFI called for an end to conflicts in Africa and stressed the need to find a solution to the conflict in Sudan.
