RTSA, UNDP GEAR UP ROAD SAFETY

By Bright Mukwasa:The Road Transport and Safety Agency-RTSA in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme -UNDP- is running a series of road shows along the two country’s biggest highways, Great East and North to promote the safety of pedestrians and non-motorized road users.The UN-backed project dubbed “pedestrians first” is aimed at promoting live-able cities” by encouraging more safe cycling and walking.The pedestrian first pilot project activities will be implemented in Lusaka by advocating for more and safer infrastructure for pedestrians.RTSA Public Relations Manager Mukela Mangolwa says the agency is targeting the two major highways as they are the most accident prone.He says the safety of all road users is top of the agency’s agenda and several programmes are being implemented to curb accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.RTSA mounted the shows in Rufunsa’s Chinyunyu area and Chongwe town.And Zambia Police Principal Traffic Officer Superintendent Yoram Phiri says of the 1-thousand 8-hundred deaths recorded in 2018, more than 8 hundred were pedestrians and cyclists.RTSA also distributed road safety materials such as reflectors for cyclists and highway code for motorists to the public.And Bunda Bunda chiefdom traditional leader Grace Phiri appealed to government to build roads that are appropriate for cyclists and pedestrians to avoid accidents.
