Lusaka, Zambia24 (05-07-2024) – Hellen Mwamba began her career in interior design, where her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to creating safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environments set the foundation for her future endeavors.
Realizing that safety extends beyond aesthetics to encompass health and well-being, she shifted her focus to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE).
This pivotal change marked the beginning of a new chapter in her career, significantly impacting the safety and well-being of many across Africa.
Leadership at SMTS Zambia
As the Founder and Managing Director of Safety Management Training Services (SMTS) Zambia and the Chief Operating Officer of SMTS Group, Hellen has propelled the organization to prominence in Occupational Health and Safety Training and Consultancy Services. Under her leadership,
SMTS Zambia received the 2022 AfriSAFE Training Provider of the Year award.
“This recognition motivates us to keep setting the highest standards in HSE training and consultancy,” she says.
Acknowledged Excellence
Hellen’s contributions to HSE have garnered her multiple awards, including the 2021 AfriSAFE Special Commendation, the 2022 Outstanding Woman in Safety, and the 2023 Industry Merit award.
Each honor reflects her dedication to advancing health, safety, and environmental standards across Africa. “These awards are a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire team at SMTS Zambia.
It’s a collective achievement,” Hellen emphasizes. In 2022, she also received the Zambia Bureau of Standards award for SME Service Provider of the Year. “Integrity and consistency are key to long-term success. These principles guide everything we do at SMTS,” she notes.

Hellen’s influence extends beyond organizational success. Recognized by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as the female face of HSE in Africa, she serves as a role model for many women in the field.
“Being seen as a role model is a huge honor. I hope my journey inspires other women to pursue their dreams in HSE,” she states. Her involvement with the Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Association (ZOHSA) Electoral Committee Board further underscores her commitment to advancing HSE standards.

Outside her professional life, Hellen is an avid traveler. Her global experiences have broadened her perspective and inspired innovative approaches in her work and personal endeavors.
“Traveling has taught me about different cultures and perspectives. It fuels my creativity and drive to innovate,” she shares. This global exposure fuels her ambition to continuously improve and embrace new challenges.
