Railways Union welcomes govt’s stance on transport infrastructure

Justin Akakulubelwa-The Railway Workers Union of Zambia -RWUZ- says it is excited over the government’s assurance that it will focus on a balanced and integrated transport infrastructure development.

RWUZ President, NATHAN ZULU, has however told ZNBC News in Livingstone that the rail system needs to be put at the centre of Zambia’s economic activities.

Mr. ZULU says this is because a good rail system has the potential to reduce the cost of doing business, through low-cost transportation of bulk cargo.

He says by investing in rail transport, the government will also create more employment opportunities, especially for the youths, because rail is labour intensive.

And Mr. ZULU has appealed to the government to consider recapitalizing the rail system so that more bulk cargo can be transported by rail.

He says the past regime’s focus on road construction and maintenance, which he says is costly compared to rail, resulted in a deplorable rail system.
