RABIES IN MUFULIRA

Mufulira district has recorded one case of rabies following a laboratory confirmation.

District veterinary Officer BRIAN MUKUPA says his department has since declared Ndeke village as an infected area following the outbreak in accordance with the dog control act no. 247 of the laws Zambia.

Dr. MUKUPA says a disease is suspected to have come from a wild dog and stray dogs from the nearby forest.

A 10-day tie up order has been put in place in the area.

He says about one thousand dogs need to be vaccinated and so far only 2-hundred and 69 have been vaccinated from January to date.

Dr. MUKUPA adds that after the tie up order period, the department will collaborate with the council and other stakeholders to control dog population through killing those without valid rabies certificate.

He has since encouraged all dog and pet owners to ensure they have a valid rabies certificate obtained from the veterinary department.
