Prisoners Will Not Vote – Home Affairs PS

500_375_site_1_rand_1300744268_prison_bars_hands_110411_b_aapThe debate about prisoners bring allowed to vote has been conclusively dealt with after Home Affairs Minister Davies Mwila alarmed the nation that inmates will vote.

Permanent Secretary Dr Chileshe Mulenga said Mwila did not receive correct information before he issued that statement.

The rights of prisoners to vote has come under the microscope after the Prison Care Organization petitioned the High Court over the possibility of prisoners voting in the general elections.

Dr Chileshe said it was against the law for prisoners to vote and that the ECZ had also added context to the debate.

And ECZ Director Priscilla Isaacs said section 19 of the Electoral Act prohibited any prisoner or person whose rights were restricted from voting.

She said it was incorrect to say that prisoners will be allowed to vote in the August 11 general elections.
