By Lomphande Muzumi

Justice Minister Given Lubinda has told campaigners against the death penalty that President Edgar Lungu will not amend part 3 of the law against death penalty in the constitution until Zambians give him the mandate to do so.

Speaking during the commemoration of the world day against death penalty this morning, Mr Lubinda said Zambia will maintain the death penalty by law and continue to sensitize its citizens on the need to completely abolish the law.

Mr Lubinda said president lungu will continue with the suspension on practice of death penalty but will not abolish the law without the voice of the majority Zambians.

And Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Kondwa Chibiya urged government to sign and vote in favor of the UN global moratorium on death penalty and contribute to the universal abolition of the cruel and violent state practice of taking away one’s life and ratify the second optional protocol to the international convention on civil and political rights.
