President Lungu assumes chairmanship of SADC organ

President Edgar LunguPresident Edgar Lungu has assumed the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on politics, Defense and Security.

President Lungu took over the mantle yesterday in Windhoek during the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government from President Joao Lourenco of Angola.

He will lead the regional Politics, Defense and Security organ for one year during which the region will keenly follow political events in the Kingdom of Lesotho, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kingdom of Eswatini, Malawi and South Africa among others.

And President Lungu says a common vision for the region is cardinal for the advancement of a collective desire for peace, security and development.

President Lungu notes that to attain this, it was imperative that the region identifies major challenges that are faced in order to formulate appropriate responses.

ZANIS reports that President Lungu is also of the view that the spirit which spurs the SADC to seek common solutions to various problems that affect the livelihood of a SADC family.

Meanwhile President Lungu believes that the Republic of Madagascar is on the right track to restoring constitutional normalcy to enable its people enjoy peace, stability and development.

He has also commended Congo DR president Joseph Kabila and his government for their commitment towards ensuring that peaceful and credible elections are held on December 23rd, 2018.

President says Zambia stands ready to bring the SADC family together to render support where possible to ensure that the DRC holds their elections peacefully and successfully.

The theme of the summit which is being held at the Safari Conference Centre is “Promoting Infrastructure Development and Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development.’’
