President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is in Berlin – Germany for the G20 Compact with Africa Summit.

President HICHILEMA, accompanied by First Lady MUTINTA HICHILEMA and other government officials arrived at Brandenburg Military Airport at 09:00hrs, Zambian time.

Finance Minister SITUMBEKO MUSOKWANE, Foreign Affairs Minister STANLEY KAKUBO and other senior government officials welcomed the President.

President HICHILEMA is  scheduled to hold a closed door bilateral meeting with Germany Chancellor OLAF SCHOLZ this evening and meet the Zambian community in Germany.

The President is in Germany at the invitation of Mr. SCHOLZ who is hosting the G20 Compact with Africa Summit which takes place tomorrow.

The Conference will focus on enhancing business and investment cooperation between African countries and G20 nations, to create an environment for private sector growth necessary for economic recovery.

President HICHILEMA, who will be among other African Heads of State and Government, is expected to participate in a working Discussion centering on investment, infrastructure and energy sectors in Africa.

The G20 Compact with Africa is a key project from Germany’s G20 presidency in 2017 with the aim of improving conditions for sustainable private sector investment and infrastructure development in African countries.

It offers a partnership approach aimed at implementing reforms, improving the macroeconomic, business and financing environments.

Meanwhile, State House says President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s trip to Germany to participate in the 5th G20 Compact with Africa -CWA-conference aligns with his ongoing pursuit of economic diplomacy, aimed at attracting trade and investment opportunities for Zambians.

State House Chief Communications Specialist CLAYSON HAMASAKA says the trip is part of President HICHILEMA’s economic policy reform agenda.

Mr. HAMASAKA says the primary objective of the conference is to increase the attractiveness of private investment through substantial improvements in the macro, business, and financing frameworks.

He says the conference brings together reform-minded African countries, international organizations, and bilateral partners from G20 and beyond to coordinate country-specific reform agendas, support policy measures, and advertise investment opportunities to private investors.

Mr. HAMASAKA says since its launch in 2017 under the German G20 Presidency, the CwA has garnered significant interest, with 13 African countries already signed up, among them leading economies such as Rwanda, Ghana, and Egypt.

He has told ZNBC News in a statement that Zambia is being invited for the first time, owing to its recent economic transformation reform agenda, and has expressed interest in joining the CwA initiative.

The State House Spokesperson says President HICHILEMA and his government believe that the country’s abundant natural resources, youthful and energetic population, and stable political climate can attract private investment.

Mr. HAMASAKA adds that the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA), therefore, provides a significant opportunity for Zambia to attract private investment, including in infrastructure.
