Power Importation Will Affect 2020 Budget Implementation

By Logic Lukwanda

Economist Oliver Saasa has projected that the pending importation of 300 megawatts of electricity from South Africa by ZESCO Limited will affect the implementation of the 2020 national budget.

Zesco is yet to commence the importation of 300 megawatts at a cost of us$21 million per month for six months due to reduced hydro power generation at Kariba dam.

Professor Saasa tells phoenix news that the power transaction though inevitable due to natural causes, will also affect economic growth target due to the expenditure on electricity.

He adds that this will also push further the inflation rate which is currently at 10.5% as the expensive imported power will translate into high costs of goods and services.
