POLITICAL VIOLENCE CONDEMNED

By Reuben Chomba/Sharon Kunda:

Patriots for Economic Progress Party -PeP- has condemned the destruction of property and assault on innocent citizens caused by suspected United Party for National Development -UPND- in Mandevu constituency in Lusaka.

Party President Sean Tembo says violence, destruction of property and assault on innocent citizens should not be part of any political party election campaign strategy.

Mr. Tembo says the violent behavior by the suspected cadres yesterday must be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.

He has since called on the UPND leadership to tame and discipline their supporters as violence has no place in the country’s democratic dispensation.

Mr. Tembo has also advised the UPND to lead by example by conducting peaceful campaigns ahead of August 12 general election failure to which they will be rejected by Zambians.

And the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes -SACCORD- has condemned the violence.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says a democratic process premised on violence will not help Zambians make an informed decision in terms of which party to vote for.

Mr. Cheembe has appealed to the leading contenders in this year’s elections to prevail over their cadres and refrain from engaging in any acts of political violence.

He has also appealed to the Zambia Police to ensure the necessary security is provided in the country and ensure citizens do not feel intimidated to participate in elections.
