PF continues to victimise civil servants after Sesheke loss

Government is allegedly transferring some civil servants in Sesheke District in what seems to be a political move in the aftermath of the parliamentary by-election that was won by the opposition UPND, according to Phoenix News.

This comes barely a week after four police officers were retired in national interest for trying to restore law and order during the election that was marred by violence.

Some affected civil servants who spoke to Phoenix News on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization have confirmed the transfers by government, alleging that they are being accused of helping the opposition to win the Sesheke by-election.

The civil servants have explained that some of those who have been transferred are those who served as Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) temporary poll staff for their involvement in the electoral process.

And information gathered by Phoenix News has also revealed that Sesheke District Intelligence Officer has been transferred to Senanga.

Meanwhile, Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia President David Chiyobe in an interview says the union has not received any reports or complaints from the victims and has since advised the affected to write to the union over the matter.

But MacDonald Chipenzi, Executive Director of Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services (GEARS) Initiative says the continued victimization of these civil servants may have serious implications in the forthcoming by-elections in Bahati and Kafue if nothing is done to assure those recruited as monitors, poll staff and electoral security officers of protection by the ECZ and police.

He has since demanded to know from the Ministry of Education and Public Service Division Management why they have allowed the victimization of these civil servants when the constitution protects and allows them to effectively participate in the electoral and democratic process of this country.
