PERFAR to Spend $69m on ARV Drugs

By Ruth Kamwi -Centre for Disease Control in Zambia Director Simon Agolory  says at least 69 million United Stated dollars will be spent in Zambia on Anti -retro viral drugs -ARVs- in the 2019 to 2020 fiscal year that starts in October.Dr. Agolory   says 526 million United States dollars has been spent on ARVs in Zambia since 2005 through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).He says the focus is on ensuring that more people with HIV access treatment and have their viral load suppressed if the HIV epidemic is to be controlled.And Ministry of Health Assistant Director -Infectious Diseases Tina Chisenga disclosed that as of April 2019, over one million people in Zambia were on ART compared to 35,000 in 2003.
