PAC SUMMONS 36 COMPANIES

By Reuben Chomba:

Public Accounts Committee -PAC- has summoned 36 companies that supplied Covid-19 commodities for the period between July to October 2021 to appear before the Committee.

The Companies will have to appear on Monday February, 28th 2022.

The Committee further took to task the Ministry of Health officials on how contracts were awarded to companies in the construction sector to supply medical equipment.

The Committee also cited Companies such as AVIC Construction Company, Higer Bus Company, and NSOCHITE Construction and Supply Company as some of those contracted to supply medical equipment.

Parliamentary Accounts Committee Chairperson WARREN MWAMBAZI who participated virtually said it is NOT justifiable on how the contracts were awarded.

Mr. MWAMBAZI said there was no transparency in the awarding of contracts.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary in Charge of Administration, GEORGE MAGWENDE said there was no morality in the awarding of contracts during the period under review.

Dr MAGWENDE said awarding of contracts to construction companies to supply medical equipment  is unjustifiable and unacceptable.

He said failure by the Ministry to appoint contract managers in the administration of contracts attributed to major lapses in the awarding of contracts.

Dr MAGWENDE further said the Ministry has since put in measures to ensure contracts managers are appointed before a contract is awarded.
