PAC Says Take Over Of Mopani By Govt Will Not Benefit Zambians

By Balewa Zyuulu

Leader of Opposition People’s Alliance for Change Andyford Banda says the decision by the government to acquire 100 percent shares in Mopani Copper Mines through state-owned mining investment company holdings ZCCM-IH will not benefit Zambians due to high levels of resource mismanagement by the government.

Yesterday, Mines Minister Richard Musukwa announced the acquisition of 100 percent shares in Mopani Copper Mine by ZCCM-IH after concluding transactional talks with the former owner, Glencore International.

And Mr Banda says the government has a proven record of failing to remain accountable on how it manages state-owned assets and public resources.

Further, Mr Banda is of the view that this decision will in the long run lead to the collapse of the mining firm resulting from efficiencies from the government.
