OXFAM Says Relief Efforts By Government To Hunger Stricken Areas Inadequate

By Patricia Mbewe

Oxfam Zambia says the relief efforts by government to hunger stricken areas does not match the level of need on the ground.

Oxfam Country Director Dailes Judge notes that despite government giving mealie meal as relief to the affected families, the help being given is not complemented by protein foods and that the people on the ground are also in need of other necessities such as health and water.

Ms Judge says it is for this reason that stakeholders need to come forward and help compliment the capacity that is there to be able to deliver.

In an interview with phoenix news, Ms Judge explained that going into October till the next harvest, the country will move into integrated phase classification (IPC) four and that 2,300 people, representing 24% of the rural population will be needing relief.

And Ms Judge says following calls to government from various stakeholders to declare the hunger situation a national crisis, Oxfam would have preferred a partial declaring in worst affected areas so that stakeholders are enabled to start mobilizing resources.
