“OVERSPENDING,CORRUPTION HAMPER PUBLIC PROCUREMENT”

Government says overspending and corruption are serious vices hampering public procurement processes.
Deputy Accountant General Chanda Mumba says the undesirable vices rob the national treasury of resources required for infrastructure development and enhanced service delivery.
Mr. Chanda has noted that public procurement accounts for 15 percent of Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product – GDP.
He says if handled properly, public procurement can bring positive results to the economy.
The Deputy Accountant General was speaking on behalf of Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Economic Management Mukuli Chikuba during a Validation Workshop for the Methodology for assessing procurement systems.
Mr. Chanda said the Public Procurement system in Zambia is no exception to the need for continuous improvement.
He said it is important that the country checks how its procurement systems are operating and learn from others on how to improve.
