Overloading of vehicles is damaging roads-RDA

ZANIS-Road Development Agency -RDA- has disclosed that overloading on public motor vehicles is rampant and a major contributor to road damage and increasing maintenance costs.

RDA Acting Director Communications and Corporate Affairs ANTHONY MULOWA said this during the stakeholders meeting for Axle Load Control in Ndola today.

Mr. MULOWA explained that the objective of Axel Load Control is to preserve the design life span of public roads by regulating maximim weight of vehicles above 6.5 tons on public roads in Zambia.

He says road infrastructure represents huge investments in Zambia hence the need to protect the roads against misuse and accelerated damage.

Mr MULOWA says RDA is responsible for the care and maintenance of the entire classified road network of 67,671 kilometers of roads.

He however explained that owing to the vast size of the network and limited resources, the RDA has concentrated its efforts on a rationalized network of 40 thousand 4- hundred and 54 kilometres deemed as the core road network.

Mr. MULOWA has since encouraged the public to support Axel Load Control as it is a noble cause that can help to grow the economy and improve safety on roads.

And Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary AUGUSTINE KASONGO who was represented by his deputy DANIEL KAMENGA observed that unrestrained and prevalent overload of trucks is the chief cause of premature deterioration of the road network.

Mr. KASONGO further observed that with overloading there is no equal market opportunities as those that do not overload are disadvantaged as they do not compete fairly with those that thrive on overloading.
