Outrage as Unza student dies in the dorm, amid claims of police brutality

ONE student was killed and another hospitalised after Paramilitary police invaded University of Zambia (UNZA) to beat up students who had engaged in a demonstration, over their unpaid meal allowances.Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo in a statement to Mwebantu confirmed reports of a student dying in the overnight riots.“Students at the University of Zambia yesterday, 04th October, 2018 at about 22 00 hours staged a riot where they blocked the Great East Road and destroyed booths within the area. Officers from Lusaka Division rushed to calm the situation but due to the volatile situation, reinforcement was sought from Paramilitary Battalion and officers managed to restore order at about 01 00 hours.” She said.She added that as “as officers were keeping vigil around the campus, information was received that parts of October Hostel was on fire and that a fourth year female student in the School of Education and another who is a second year student aged 20 years had suffocated and were rushed to the clinic at the Campus and later to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital and unfortunately the fourth year student died while the other student is still admitted. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.”She said police officers have continued patrolling the campus and keeping vigil. The situation is currently normal. Post Views: 3
