The National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) has urged mining companies looking to increase production to also ensure comprehensive safety measures are put in place.

NUMAW President James Chansa has told Q-News that mining companies should not only concentrate on making profits, but should also ensure that their workers operate in a safe and conducive environment.

Mr Chansa says his union will work with mining firms that have invested in safety measures aimed at preventing mine accidents and fatalities.

The NUMAW President`s comment comes in the wake of the announcement by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) that it has put in place stringent safety measures aimed at preventing accidents following its intentions to increase production to at least 400 tons per day translating into 12,500 tons per month
