North Farmers advised to Venture in Livestock Production

(NAIS) Fisheries and Livestock Minister Nkandu Luo has urged farmers in Northern Province to venture into livestock and pasture production to improve their income levels.

Professor Luo says since time immemorial, farmers in the North have not engaged in livestock farming but concentrated only on fishing and growing of crops such as Cassava, maize and beans among others.

She has emphasised that farmers should change the narrative by utilising the abundant land and water resources the province is blessed with, thereby turning the area into a livestock center.

Professor Luo said this when she handed chickens, cattle and egg incubators valued at 175 thousand Kwacha, to women and youths of Mporokoso and Chilubi districts in Northern Province.

She said her Ministry through the Enhanced Small-Holder Livestock Investment Programme -E-SLIP- will continue distributing livestock to vulnerable groups across the country in order to guarantee household food and nutritional security.

And Chilubi Member of Parliament Mulenga Fube thanked government for the initiative, saying it will help transform the area which has lagged behind in livestock rearing.

Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Betha Nyimba from Mporokoso expressed gratitude for the gesture as it will help to improve her livelihood.
