CHIEFTAINESS Nkomeshya Mukamabo II of the Soli-speaking people of Chongwe says the people in her chiefdom have benefited from development under the first five-year tenure of the Patriotic Front (PF) in Government.
Meanwhile, business in Chongwe yesterday came to a standstill as President Edgar Lungu and First Lady Esther were in the district to address the people ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
The traditional leader said the area had benefited from two new universities, namely, Chalimbana and Palabana, including improved road infrastructure which had added to improvement in the welfare of the people in the area.
“Your Excellency, thank you for coming, your people have been waiting for you since morning because they are eager to hear the message that you have brought for them.
“We have seen development here in terms of universities, roads and our people here are happy that Government has shown the will to improve their livelihood and we are grateful,” Chieftainess Nkomeshya said.
She said this yesterday when the first couple paid a courtesy call on her ahead of the public rally.
In response, Mr Lungu said his Government would continue working hard to ensure that peoples’ needs were met.
“Your Royal Highness, we are here and I brought your daughter (Ms Lungu) with me so that we could talk to our people and show them what we are doing to improve their welfare.
In solidarity with the first family and the entourage, Chongwe residents clenched their fists as the convoy drove past to and from the venue of the rally.
The residents chanted ‘Chagwa, Chagwa’ as the motorcade carrying the first couple drove along the Great East Road to the chieftainess’ palace.
After the rally, the first couple briefly visited Chongwe District Hospital before heading back to Lusaka where scores of people lined up along the Great East Road raising clenched fists in solidarity with the PF.
The Head of State is tomorrow expected to hold a public rally in Rufunsa while he is scheduled to visit Luangwa on Friday and Kafue on Saturday.
