NGOCC offers solidarity to Speaker of the National Assembly

By Sharon Siame

Speaker of the National Assembly NELLY MUTTI says she will remain focused on her functions in the National Assembly in accordance with the standing orders and the Constitution.

Ms. MUTTI says she accords great respect to all Members of Parliament but that this should be mutual.

The Speaker says she is NOT the opposition to the Parliamentarians but a custodian of standing orders in the House.

Ms. MUTTI says it is NOT right to assume that she stops Members of Parliament from debating when she guides them on parliamentary proceedings.

The Speaker said this when a delegation from the Non Government Gender Organisation Coordinating Council -NGOCC- called on her at the National Assembly to deliver a message of solidarity.

Ms. MUTTI also urged the media to verify facts before publishing stories and give all parties an opportunity to air their side of the story.

And NGOCC Board Chairperson GRACE SINKAMBA said the council is concerned with recent happenings in Parliament and the disrespect towards the Speaker.

Ms. SINKAMBA said it is the view of NGOCC that the Speaker of the National Assembly is being targeted because she is a woman.
