NDC threatens to sue police over permits for public gathering

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to take legal action against the Zambia Police if it continues to deny it permit to hold public meetings.

NDC Acting Spokesperson Misheck Moyo says his party finds it absurd that the police denied his party a permit to hold a public consultative meeting in Chingola on Saturday.

Mr. Moyo has charged that his party thinks that Zambia is slowly drifting into an authoritarian regime as can be seen by the continued alleged unprofessional conduct by the Zambia Police.

He says it authoritarian for the police to stop some opposition political parties to hold public meetings while allowing the ruling party to enjoy the freedom of assembly .

Mr. Moyo states that the NDC is therefore demanding for the immediate depoliticization of the police service.

He has argued that in a democratic Country the police must act professionally, independently and make decisions that are in the interest of the general populace.
