Mwenya Chibwe successfully switches to Chipolopolo

26 years old South Africa born Zambian goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe Mwenya has completed his passport formalities and is officially eligible to play for the Zambia national team.

Mwenya who is currently the first-choice goalkeeper at Polokwane City in the South African premier league, a club he only joined on 4th June 2019. He, however, still has tight competition at Club level from Zimbabwean International goalkeeper George Chigova.

Chibwe was eligible to play for Bafana Bafana but he turned them down for the Copper and Green of Zambia. According to South African media reports, Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Nteski extended an invitation to Chibwe but he turned it down in preference to Chipolopolo.

“We made a small research on Cyril Chibwe from Polokwane City, and he’s a South African, born in North West, and we sent a call-up for him to join us for this camp,” Ntseki told Kick off

“Unfortunately, he will be playing for his father’s country, which is Zambia. So he will be joining the Zambian team in camp and that is why we have Ricardo coming in. They are the same age, Born in 1993.”

Mwenya has since left for Benin to join the Chipolopolo who plays the Squirrels on Sunday (tomorrow) in an international friendly match.
