MWEETWA CITES HICCUPS ON AGRICULTURE

By NAIS:

Southern Province Minister CORNELIUS MWEETWA says there are a number of challenges making agriculture unproductive.

Mr. MWEETWA cited some of the challenges as climate change, poor agricultural practices, lack of mechanisation and poor market linkages.

The minister outlined the challenges in a speech ready on his behalf by Pemba District Commissioner OBEY HABEENZU during a Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems Project in Zambia -SIFAZ- held in Pemba.

Mr. MWEETWA said the project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization -FAO- in partnership with the International Maize and Wheat improvement Centre and the Ministry of Agriculture.

He said Zambia has taken many steps to address the challenges that the agriculture sector and farmers face through implementation of responsive and enabling policies and innovative programmes and projects such as the SIFAZ.

And SIFAZ Chief Technical Advisor MTENDERE MPHATSO appreciated the efforts that farmers have put in to have a good crop harvest.

Meanwhile, Southern Province Agricultural Coordinator MAX CHOOMBE said the field demonstration plots exhibited during the SIFAZ field day were a success story because of the collaborative nature of the European Union and FAO among other stakeholders.
