Mwape Musonda wins 2018/19 PSL Golden Boot

Black Leopards striker Mwape Musonda has won the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) Golden Boot after notching 16 goals in the 2018/19 season.

On a dramatic final day in the league, Leopards kicked of their match against Cape Town City in the relegation zone. They were second from the bottom of the table with 27 points after 29 games. They needed points and hoped that other results would go their way.

It was a lively start to the game and Leopards were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute. League top scorer Musonda stepped up to take spot kick hoping to add another to his tally, but he was denied by Peter Leeuwenburgh in the City goal. Leopards however won the game with other results going their way to survive relegation finishing fourth from bottom.

The 28 year old ends the season on 16 goals to become the 5th Zambian player to take home the PSL Golden Boot gong.

He joins the illustrious list of Dennis Lota who was top scorer in the 1999/90 season for Orlando Pirates with 18 goals.

Four Seasons later, Collins Mbesuma led Kaizer Chiefs to a league triumph netting 25 times in the league which still stands as the PSL record.

Then there was Christopher Katongo who scored 15 goals when he played half the season before joining Danish club Brondby in the 2006/07 season.

Red Arrows striker James Chamanga also put his name on the record when he scored14 goals from 21 games for Moroka Swallows.

Musonda ends league having scored more than half of his team’s 30 goals in the league and has two more goals in the domestic cup.

Amongst the Zambian plying their trade in South Africa, Justin Shonga is second to the former Pirates striker having scored 6 goals in the league and 11 goals in all competitions.
