MUZ Decries Increased Mining Accidents in 2018

Mineworkers Union of Zambia General Secretary George Mumba says 2018 recorded an increased number of mine accidents.

Mumba said 2018 exposed a lot of irregularities in mining safety areas which needed to be looked into next year.

He has since challenged mining companies to step up efforts to ensuring a reduction in the number of mine accidents.

“We have a serious challenge with these mine accidents, if you look at the records you will realise that there is an increase this year and we should not be handling issues like this. It is sad that safety rules have been taken for granted and this has led to loss of lives, so our appeal is the mining companies to do more and reduce these mine accidents,” Mumba said.

He said while Government has been calling for increased safety working environments, others are failing to play their part in realising reduced loss of lives through accidents.

Mumba said safety officers need to improve and ensure the current statistics are reduced next year.
