Mulonga Water begins multi million Dollar water rehab project

Tamara Muswala-Mulonga Water and Sanitation Company has embarked on a $156m project to improve water and sewer infrastructure in three districts on the Copperbelt.

ZNBC’s TAMARA MUSWALA reports that the project to be implemented in Chingola, Mufulira and Chililabombwe is the first major infrastructure upgrade since the inception of the company in 1998.

Mulonga Water Acting Communications Manager DEBORAH KANGENDE says the project will enable the company to improve its performance as a commercial utility and provide customers with adequate and sustainable water and sanitation services.

Ms. KANGENDE says the project seeks to rehabilitate and expand key water and sanitation infrastructure such as building a new water treatment plant to enhance water supply.

She says the company currently supplies water for ten hours per day which is however set to increase to 24 hours with the upgrade of infrastructure.

And the contractor, China Henan International Cooperation Group Project Manager ZHANG ÇHUANLIN says the project which started in March this year is expected to be complete in August next year.

Mr. ZHANG said Mulonga will be expected to improve water supply to its customers.

Meanwhile, Project consultant SIMON BUTLER said some of the works being undertaken include replacing water pipes and other infrastructure that have become obsolete.
