MUKUBESA MUNDIA- The person, The Musician, The Candidate
With less than three days remaining before the Lusaka city mayoral elections, it’s the same story, campaigns and promises ranging from provisions of free wi-fi by Miles Sampa of the Patriotic Front to reinstating street vendors by Kangwa Chilesha of the Upnd since there are no alternative trading places, there seems to be little coming in from other candidates, NDC’s Saboi Imboela inclusive. Of everything one would want to write and highlight about these elections, nothing beats the surprising candidature of Mukubesa Mundia popularly known as Petersen Zagaze or Zaga man.
Well I choose to break him into three parts namely the person, the musician and the mayoral candidate.
THE PERSON.
I don’t know Petersen on a personal level, neither is it my business to know how he handles his personal life, but one thing is apparent and that is that he is a family oriented man, as is seen mostly of him showing off his family to the public; his wife, songbird Rozay and his kids. That is something of rarity among our male musicians who like to pose single in attraction of female fans. One that he scores a 10/10.
THE MUSICIAN.
As a musician, I summarize him as intelligently controversial. Since his emergency on the Zambian musical scene in mid 2000 Mukubesa Mundia aka Petersen Zagaze hasn’t been short of controversy with his songs, especially his political and social commentary ones, he has attacked the politician, the clergy and the sex worker. Most notable of the songs against the politician are Anyandule and Job 13:13, the clergyman can not forget his 2013 hit song Amakwebo and the latest one Maloza, the sex worker was also not spared in the 2010 hit entitled “Hule ni Hule.” In summary Mr Mundia is an accomplished and consistent musician who has used his music to speak against societal vices; corruption, thefts, segregation, political violence, prostitution, injustice and extortion something void of most musicians who focus on love messages, his music carries with it the real defination of what music should be – Inform, educate and entertain. He gets a 10/10.
MAYORAL CANDIDATE.
He is devoid of political experience and comes in contesting on a party with little or even zero political following. One thing that he has that supersedes all the experience needed politically is his unquestionable intelligence and the clarity with which he brings out his manifesto, something none of his competitors have managed to match till now.
The following are his seven points of focus when voted into power.
1. Increasing council revenue base.
2. Building modern markets and alternative trading places for displaced vendors.
3. Removing political interference in council operations.
4. Enhancing cleanliness in the city, a continuation from the ongoing cleaning exercises.
5. Improve the operation of council police to boost security provided by the state police within the city and compounds.
6. Facilitate programs to empower Lusaka residents..
7. Fight corruption at the council and improve efficient.
It’s apparent there is a clarity of ideas, and that Mukubesa Mundia knows the real needs of the people and how to get things going, that is in direct contrast to the vague campaign messages of both the PF and UPND candidates who are not at par with the real needs of the residents of the great city of Lusaka.
Pettiness, Caderism and Tribalism aside, he stands as the best and most attractive candidate and Lusaka residents will do right to vote for a him as a worthy representative, one politically incorrupt and with tangible solutions to their problems.
If it was in my power to vote for everyone in Lusaka, I would vote for Petersen Mukubesa Mundia. #TIIKOSESA!!!
