Muchinga Province PF Angered With Chinese Nationals Cutting Down Trees In The Province With Approval By Concessions Signed In Lusaka

By Michael Kaluba

Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Joyce Nsamba has expressed concern at the number of Chinese nationals that are cutting down trees in the province with authorization by concessions signed in Lusaka.

Speaking at a technical bench meeting at the Copperbelt University forestry symposium, Ms. Nsamba complained that it had become increasingly worrying that large area concessions are authorized for the Chinese nationals while the country seeks to address the effects of climate change and to mitigate the far reaching impact of deforestation.

She also revealed that Muchinga Province is under threat from caterpillar collectors who have since resorted to cutting down entire trees to collect the seasonal edible insects.

Ms. Nsamba said a quick survey by the provincial administration office revealed that the culprits are mostly business people from the Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces.

And Ms Nsamba says there is need for Zambia as a country to take issues of deforestation seriously because it remains a huge threat to the future of the country.
