MOVE STEP FURTHER-CSPR ADVISES GOVT

June 21, 2019June 21, 20192By Patrick Mulenga:The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction -CSPR- has proposed that government should consider introducing further austerity measures to save the economy.CSPR executive director Patrick Nshindano has proposed that government halts new infrastructure projects and reduce on social protection spending as an austerity measure.Mr. Nshindano who is also a member of the Zambia Tax Platform says amidst the proposed austerity measures there is need to secure confidence in the market to lower financing cost, stopping further debts and Promote private sector led growth.Speaking in Lusaka today during a Civil Society Poverty Observatory Group state of the Economy breakfast meeting, Mr. Nshinadano said there is need for consistent and predictable open border policy to allow the smooth flow of trade to increase foreign exchange.And Economic commentator Chibamba Kanyama has called on government to engage with the International Monetary Fund -IMF- to ensure the economy gets back on track.Meanwhile Consumer Unity Trust Society-CUTS- representative Chenai Mukumba has stressed the need to address matters relating to climate change with the seriousness it deserves.Ms. Mukumba says this is because the impact of climate change increases poverty levels in the country.
