Mine Workers Union Rejected KCM’s Plan To Pay Remaining Arrears In Phases

By Tinkerbel Mwila

United Mine Workers Union Of Zambia –UMUZ-has rejected the move by Konkola copper mine –KCM- to pay in phases the remaining 60% of the accrued benefits owed to over 5,000 workers.

KCM has announced that it will embark on a phased payment of the remaining 60% pension benefits to all eligible members who will be paid in three installments commencing in December 2021 and ending in June 2023.

But UMUZ president Wisdom Ngwira in an interview with Phoenix News is urging KCM management to pay off at once the pension benefits to the workers in order to avoid unnecessary tension.

He says KCM should source funds and ensure all the workers are paid in the shortest period of time.

Mr. Ngwira says the union has since engaged KCM management on the matter and has revealed that the union is aware of some individuals who have manipulated the truth about pension matters at KCM so that they can sponsor anarchy and destabilize operations.
