Mayuka and Clifford Mulenga miss out as William Njobvu names his best Chipolopolo XI

William Njobvu has revealed his all-time XI of players he has alongside at the national team.

The Sensational Zanaco midfielder William Njobvu has had quite an impressive career so far and went on to represent Zambia at five continental tournaments including three senior AFCON’s.

The ZamFoot Crew caught up with the 33-year-old to talk about his best eleven comprising of players he had played alongside at the national team from junior level up to the senior team.

Njobvu was very active for the Copper Bullets between 2005 and 2013. He was part of the George Lwandamina coached Zambia U-20 national team that reached the round of 16 at the Canada 2007 World Cup.

Njobvu who admitted to having played with a lot of talented players who would easily go beyond the eleven chosen could not find space for the 2012 golden boot winner, Emmanuel Mayuka.

I have been to 5 AFCON tournaments. 3 Senior Team, 1 CHAN, and 1 U20. To be honest, the best players I ever played with at the National team level are more than 11 but we can do with these for now

Mayuka and Njobvu played together at U-20 and also senior level but it is, however, South Africa based forward Collins Mbesuma who made the cup and not surprising given the ability and prowess of ‘King David’.

Other strikers who missed the cut were Roger Kola who was with Njobvu at U-20 but failed to make a mark at senior level, 2012 AFCON winner James Chamanga and China-based Jacob Mulenga.

Kennedy Mweene, This could have been one of the easiest decisions to make because for the Bankers midfielder because 35-year-old is the best Zambian goalkeeper of the modern era.

The last time Zambia played Nigeria, the two teams drew 1 – 1 in the group stage of 2013 Africa Cup. Did you know that Kennedy Mweene’s last equalizer was the first time a goalkeeper scored a goal within 90 minutes of play in the history of the comeptition?

Mweene is Zambia’s most capped player, having represented Zambia 120 times and was a key member of the 2012 AFCON winning side.

Joseph Musonda, Another obvious choice. The now Nkana physical trainer has had an impressive career at the national level and he is Zambia’s second most capped player after Kennedy Mweene according to FIFA.

Emmanuel Mbola, A bit of a surprising choice but Mbola despite his career at national team not having been long, He was surely a reliable asset and no one can argue about his technical ability.

Hichani Himonde and Stopila Sunzu, For the center back positions Njobvu went for the 2012 AFCON winning pair.

The duo has had impressive careers with the Copper Bullets with 2012 as the epitome of their performance.

William Njobvu, Easy choice.

Isaac Chansa, The former Orlando Pirates midfielder is one of the best Africa has had in the last 20/30 years and deserves his place in William’s team.

Fwayo Tembo, One of the most technically gifted players, Zambia has produced and played with Njobvu both at junior and senior level hence it is no surprise he made the cut.

Rainford Kalaba, The TP Mazembe captain has given Zambia some very good performances and when the country won it’s first and only AFCON title, Kalaba was a pillar of the team with the Commentators often saying when he (Kalaba) plays well Zambia plays well.

Collins Mbesuma, The former Portsmouth striker is arguably Zambia’s best striker of the last 3 decades hence he easily walks into the team.

Christopher Katongo, The 2012 AFCON winning captain was a leader on the pitch during his time at the National team.

He usually came up with match-winning performances like the 3-1 win over South Africa on 9th September 2007 on the final day of the 2008 AFCON qualifiers to see Zambia finish top of their group.

Katongo went on to win the 2012 BBC African footballer of the year following his heroics at the 2012 AFCON where he scored three goals and was named as the player of the tournament.
